Breathing New Life Into A Sunroom: Our Sophisticated Ski Lodge Transformation
There is nothing quite as magical as seeing a vision come to life, especially when it’s a space that offers not just comfort, but also character and elegance. Today, we (Benny and Kris) want to share our latest transformation journey with you—a journey that turned our sunroom into a sophisticated ski lodge-themed great room.
Before The Transformation
The sunroom was initially a traditional space with clear windows allowing for natural sunlight, a feature we wanted to maintain in our design. However, it needed a transformation to make it a focal point of our home, a place for entertainment and relaxation.

Creating the Mood Board:
Before we took a hammer or paintbrush to our sunroom, we needed a roadmap, a guide that would keep our design focused and cohesive. That’s where our mood board came into play. Compiling a variety of images, textures, and color swatches, our mood board served as a visual tool, a tangible manifestation of our dream ski lodge.

The Transformation Journey
The first step in our renovation was choosing the right materials that would evoke the essence of a ski lodge while also maintaining a modern and sophisticated touch.

Shiplap Walls: Oyster Gray Stain
Our choice of oyster gray for the shiplap walls brought an essential cabin-like feel to the room. The muted, sophisticated color offers a perfect balance of warmth and coolness, reminiscent of tranquil winter landscapes without being overbearing. We chose shiplap specifically for its textured look and feel, enhancing the ski lodge theme we were aiming for.
Reclaimed Barn Wood Fireplace
A ski lodge wouldn’t be complete without a cozy fireplace. We used reclaimed barn wood to create a rustic, yet refined, focal point in the room. The aged texture and rich tones of the barn wood add depth and character, creating an inviting space to gather and warm up on chilly evenings. The barn wood’s history adds another layer of charm, knowing that it has stood the test of time just like our love for each other and our home.

Corrugated Metal Ceiling
We decided to take a walk on the wild side with the ceiling. By using corrugated metal, we introduced an industrial edge to the sophisticated space. The silver tone of the metal beautifully contrasts with the oyster gray shiplap walls and the rustic fireplace, creating a harmonious blend of textures and colors.
Custom High Top Table
No great room is complete without a communal space to gather and celebrate. We designed a custom high-top table to seat 12 people, perfect for hosting dinner parties and enjoying memorable meals with family and friends. The table, made with the same reclaimed barn wood as the fireplace, further reinforces the rustic theme while offering ample seating.
The Transformation Aftermath: A Sophisticated Ski Lodge
The result? A sunroom-turned-great-room that breathes elegance and sophistication while giving a nod to a classic ski lodge theme. The transformation is astonishing—our sunroom is now a warm and inviting space where we can entertain, relax, and enjoy the beauty of our home.
The journey was filled with hard work and decisions, but the outcome is worth every moment spent. Each element of the room, from the oyster gray shiplap walls to the custom high top table, has been selected and designed with care to create a space that truly reflects our taste and style.
We hope you’ve enjoyed this tour of our transformation journey as much as we enjoyed the process. Stay tuned for our next home renovation project!
